UK report and other things new(ish)

Mon Mar 8, 2010, 1:32 PM
So, as you may have noticed I recently spent a week in the UK. I spent 4 days in London and 2 days in Cardiff. It was completely unplanned but I had a wonderful time hanging out with a friend I met in Seattle last summer and some other people I met on the trip. Some of the pictures I took you may see here as I will be uploading them for a while. It's surprisingly hard to decide which ones I should submit... :D

This whole trip has got me thinking (as they usually do :D) and I really can't understand people who don't like to travel. I understand that traveling is expensive and sometimes not possible but I know a couple of people who can't stand the idea of not sleeping in their own bed every night or peeing in someone else's toilet for more than a day. As for me, traveling is a way, not only of meeting new people and learning about new cultures, but of finding a desire to live and to do so again. I could literally feel my batteries charging as the week went on. I came back home with wonderful stories, memories, friendships and an inexplicable will to go back to studying and my old "boring" routine. I believe no amount of lying on the couch watching stupid TV shows could've done that.

And in the light of my newly acquired courage/crazyness I decided to finally make an appointment with a hairstylist. Most of you don't now but I've been cutting my own hair for more than 7 years now and before that I had my mom do it so that means I haven't been to a hair salon since I was about 4 years old! Fascinating, huh? :D So I decided I would have my hair cut short (not VERY short though) and maybe do some highlights or something like that. It should be done someday this week and of course, you'll get to see a brand new ID. ;) I haven't quite decided what kind of hairdo it will be but keep your fingers crossed it turns out okay. Thank god it's still cold enough for a hat in case it doesn't! :D

Take care everyone,
xXx

Pre-Christimas update

Tue Dec 8, 2009, 11:28 AM
Hi everyone! Hope you are doing well. :)

First things first, a huge thank you to everyone who is, was or will be watching and commenting on my work. I would like to point out that I appreciate each and every one of your critiques and compliments. So here's a celebratory toast to my reaching the 5,000 pageviews mark!

So, I've been checking out some other artists' work lately and there are some amazing architectural photographers out there. So I decided to try it myself and it's been a lot of fun. Unfortunately, Zagreb is not a big city and there are only so much tall and modern-looking buildings out there so it might become boring after a while. :D And, of course, please feel free to comment and give advice as you see fit - making mistakes is, after all, the only way to improve. :)

I am also looking to invest some money into new equipment. I've been lucky enough to be able to buy two new lenses in the States so I got a Canon 70-200mm f/4L and a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 macro. At the moment I am super excited about the latter because I've got a gig coming up and it should be great for that exact purpose. :woohoo:

I am also thinking of trying to fix some DIY lighting equipment. I love doing these kinds of things myself and it should be a lot cheaper than the pro stuff. I actually tried something like that a long time ago when I took a small photography course which actually got me into this whole mess. I remember that we set some things on fire back then trying to figure out the best way to diffuse the light. :onfire: Ah, good times...

I have no idea where all this inspiration and creativity is coming from but the down side of it all is that I should actually be focusing on my school work instead of this. :D

Oh, yeah, and happy pre-Christmas time everybody! I am sooo excited about the holidays, as usual. :santa:

Schmap and stuff

Mon Nov 16, 2009, 3:48 AM
Hi, guys!

It's not really a big deal but I still think it's kinda cool that one of my photos was included in the newly released ninth edition of Schmap Chicago Guide so I thought I'd let you know. You can see the bigger photo if you click on the picture or here. :)

As for other good news, my friends from the band Sideburns finally played live in front of an audience for the first time. They took part in a competition of young bands/singers and won second place which means a great deal more when you consider the fact that mom of the winning band's frontman was one of the judges. :D Anyway, they invited me to take some photos of them and it was loads of fun. They said something about another gig somewhere very soon so go check them out if you can, they really are a good band. :)

Also, some cool new interviews and articles featuring photos by yours truly will be up soon on Backpackrock.net. :)

Umm, I think that's all for now. Time to get back to studying.

Larger Than Life?

Wed Oct 14, 2009, 3:18 PM
Ever since I was a little girl I was amazed by art and artists. I perceived them as people from out of this world. Different and capable of conveying emotion in the most unexpected ways. And I always thought I actually understood what they were trying to say. And I always dreamed I would one day be like them. Powerful and aware and present.

I cannot say I think of myself as a true artist. But I do have moments (which I usually don't recognize until much later) when I try to express some of my thoughts and feelings through my photos. Some of them I don't even show to anyone but those that I do I never feel actually made a difference. Maybe it's just that there is really nothing to them but gibberish. Maybe it's because my skills are not good enough yet but maybe it's just that people are not interested. And then I begin wondering is it really what an artist's world is like, empty and insecure? Is it really what I want to be? Or is it always like that with dreams - once they come true they are not so shiny anymore?

Exam time

Sun Oct 11, 2009, 1:24 PM
Hi everyone! How have you all been? :)

So it's two weeks of hell for me until Oct 24th. I've got a bunch of exams soon and I have to study all the time and all I want to do is shoot or sleep or play frisbee. So obviously I'm wasting my time doing neither. :D

As for news in my life, I'm still shooting concerts for Backpackrock.net, still single and still happy. Oh, and I bought a new lens! Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L USM and I'm loving it. :)

Hugs and kisses,
Petra
